Happy Birthday, New York Pizza!

23 Mar 2011

Some people just can’t get enough of the good stuff. Some people want to find the familiar flavors of home when living thousands of miles from away. Some people wanna taste New York without boarding a plane. If you’re one of those people, you’ll love New York Pizza in downtown Budapest.

Exactly two years ago, former chef at several joints in the US, Szabolcs Nedoba’s passion for all things New Yorker led him to open the first authentic New York-style restaurant in town. At New York Pizza everything tastes just like it would in the Big Apple as all the dishes are home-made, the ingredients, some of the furniture, and even the kitchenware is from the States. But for those of you who don’t know your deep dish from your California-style pizza, here’s what New York-style is about. It’s pretty similar to good old Italian Margherita, but the thin crust is softer, the tomato sauce and mozzarella topping is more generous, and the slices are huge. The theory behind it was that you buy your slice, fold it in two, and you’re ready to go.

That’s one option at New York Pizza. The other option is that you go to the upstairs seated area, and spend some time pondering over the extensive menu. There are around a hundred dishes to choose from, and they even take extra orders. There are 26 types of pizza currently on offer, ranging from Margherita (spelled Margarita, in true New York style) through Mexicana (with chili con carne, jalapeno and mozzarella) to BBQ chicken. There’s a wide range of pasta (all served with fresh salad), Buffalo wings, wraps with fries, hot and cold sandwiches, but if you’re after something truly brilliant, try the rolls or the burgers (with fries and coleslaw). Though vegetarian dishes are not abundant on the menu, the chef is more than willing to prepare one for you.

And now, to celebrate the second anniversary of New York Pizza, they give away vouchers to FUNZINE readers.
